Breaking the Rules of Design

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail”

Paths

Paths—Garnet, MT

Design has no rules and the guidelines are only govern by culture and expectation. Be aware when you cross those lines and have a clear answer to the question, Why?.

Design in a Nutshell

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

Good design is a great combination of common sense, unusual imagination, clarity of purpose-with a prerequisite knowledge of structure, values, color, aesthetic insight and a deep reverence for the love of life.”

Along the shores of Superior

An Upward Gaze, Along the shores of Superior, Tofte, Minnesota

I read once that our sight evolved to look down at path we follow and level with the horizon to search for prey but I found looking up yields the most spectacular designs. Even if you stumble over a few stones now and again it is worth the look-see.

Here’s to the Crazy Ones

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes … the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. … You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. … They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”  ~ Apple Commercial, 1997

Drama on Lake Superior

Reading to the Jobs’ biography. Very inspiring… Plus I am visiting You Tube and viewing some of the interviews, commercials and slices of history relating to Apple and Steve Jobs. I’m still on Lake Superior… Enjoying the views of the lake and working on my class plans.” Great day.

Let the Viewer Stroll within the Picture

Let the viewer stroll around within the picture,to force him to forget himself and so to become a part of the picture.”

Dreams... Matching Reality with the Dream

Today, I am beginning to put together the layout and design course I will be teaching at MCTC. I think I found a terrific book, Ellen Lupton’s and Jennifer Cole Phillips text—Graphic Design the New Basics. I chose it because the authors focus on the language and concepts of design rather than software or making the giant leap as most graphic design text into page layout, type, or “reworking pop-culture vocabularies.” I am excited and energize and ready to return to the classroom soon. As I work on this course I look forward to reviewing many of the formal design structures presented in this book.

An Astonishing Place

Exhaust the little moment. Soon it dies. And be it gash or gold it will not come Again in this identical guise.

Overlooking the Northshore

Artists and designers reflect culture. They often put a light upon and comment on it and use it in their work whether intentional or not. Sadly, as an artist and designer gets older it is harder to stay engaged, to stay interested. It is often more fun to think back and reminisce about past friends, events, and celebrations. It does get tougher but stay engaged and be astonished because it is essential to your work. Milton Glaser said,”You can lose your capacity for astonishment. And that is a great loss, because the world is a very astonishing place.”

I’m working hard to stay astonished.
